This modest mid-century modern home needed to expand to accommodate a growing active family. The specific program requirements requested were to add a shared bathroom, screened porch, mudroom and a detached two-car garage. The locations and size for each of the additions was a response to logical functional connections as well as sensitivity to the massing and roof connection points. The screened porch volume was derived as an extrusion of the family room gable end profile and anchors the rear elevation composition. The bathroom and mudroom additions flank the screened porch and use shed roofs to contrast the screened porch gable, play on the mid-century vocabulary, balance the composition and bring in northern light. A new two-car garage was built at the existing carport location with a shed roof to mirror the mudroom addition roof form. A walkway cuts through the composition of additions and acts as a datum to link the driveway entry to the new fire pit patio. The patio is carved into the existing topography with concrete retaining walls creating a private intimate escape.
